Stephen Andrews at the AGO
Stephen Andrews POV - to run April 23 - August 30, 2015, will be exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ontario.
In addition to showing a selection of Andrews’ works from over the past 15 years, the AGO will be debuting a new series of work, “Butterfly Effect,” 2014-15.
Robert Enright interviewed the artist for Border Crossings Issue 120, which can be read here. For purchase details, see the bottom of the interview’s web page.
“…because, as we’ve acknowledged, images are viral. They go in to your psyche and they do not come out. We have to look at these images not for their shock value, but as a way of creating agency in the viewer so they might do something about a particular situation […] intuitively I did understand that beauty was a great tool. I also understood that it was dangerous. Beauty is not pretty; beauty is the sublime; it’s at the brink of something; it’s at the edge, and when you stand at the precipice, that’s when it is most terrifying and most beautiful.” - Stephen Andrews on death and beauty, an excerpt from his interview with Robert Enright for “The Story So Far,” Border Crossings Issue 120

Border Crossings regularly delves into the archives to revisit interviews conducted with artists. The relevance of our back issues lies most particularly in the uniqueness of this format. Published within the pages of the magazine, it allows works and writings to be read and reread in their printed form, locating the content as close to its original source as it can be, and with lasting significance. The interview is an unparalleled resource that looks with interest and an informed gaze into the mind of many a creative. We do this for the pleasure of the flipped page, the staying power of print and for the body of critical artistic conversation that this living collection aims to create and share. Look through our Index to discover the artists we’ve covered and to build a library of your own.
