Daniel Baird Nominated for the National Magazine Awards!
The National Magazine Awards Foundation has just announced the nominations for the 2013 year. Border Crossings extends a warm congratulations to Daniel Baird, whose article focused on the great Patti Smith.
“Smith’s drawings are both fierce and incredibly intimate and often, at least in part, consist of frantically improvised text. In the early figurative drawing, Self Portrait, 1969, which shows the strong influence of the Willem deKooning Woman series of the 1950s, Smith’s smeared head and face and truncated torso look like they are in furious motion, a black cloud of words rising like smoke from her head.” (42)
The article was published in Border Crossings’ Issue 125, the Photography issue. Read the full article here.
Also featured in this issue are interviews with Robert Frank and John Massey, as well as articles on John Cage and the Black Star Photo Agency. And because there’s nothing like the print version to make one salivate, we encourage you to order your own copy of Issue 125 here.
Winners chosen from the National Magazine Award nominees will be announced June 6 in Toronto. To keep abreast of coming announcements, see here.
