Now in its 41st year of publishing, Border Crossings is recognized as a significant contemporary magazine focussing on issues of relevance and concern in art and culture. The magazine engages the topics it addresses, in good part, through interviews—committed to the artist’s voice and providing first-person, unmediated perspectives. The magazine’s articles, reviews, essays and portfolios are substantial and broad-ranging.

POSITION TITLE: Administrative Director

TERMS: Full-time, 40 hours per week, in person. A compressed or flexible work week may be considered.

LOCATION: Winnipeg


Border Crossings is currently seeking an organized, passionate and dedicated individual to serve the role of Administrative Director for a nationally and internationally recognized art magazine. This is a senior role that reports directly to the magazine’s Editor and is responsible for overseeing all administrative and office management duties, including fundraising and development.

The Administrative Director is a new position to Border Crossings, complementing the magazines’ existing staff team of four, which includes: (1) The Editor; (2) Operations and Circulation; (3) Advertising and Distribution; (4) Accounting; and (5) Special Projects Coordinator.


-Administrative support to the Editor, including managing office, funding, and production calendars
-Grant writing, tracking, and reporting
-Leading and executing annual fundraising projects and initiatives
-Office management functions and staff coordination
-Providing support to the Board of Directors, including meeting scheduling, preparing agendas and minutes, and corporate filing
-Directing marketing and promotions initiatives in collaboration with the Editor, including developing and implementing special projects
-Funder and donor relations
-Other administrative and office management duties as required


The Administrative Director should be an experienced and committed professional, with a minimum of five years of experience working in an administrative capacity, preferably in the non-profit and/or cultural sector.

The Administrative Director should:

-Possess a strong understanding of financial operations and funding in the non-profit sector, including experience and skill in grant writing and budgeting
-General knowledge of the granting bodies, practices of related government agencies, charitable foundations and corporations
-Have advanced writing and communication skills
-Be a strategic thinker and problem solver—focussed, motivated and able to manage priorities
-Have excellent interpersonal and relational management skills with the ability to work well collaboratively and as a team member
-Have familiarity with the functions of a Board of Directors
-Have experience managing staff
-Be well versed with Mac computers and products
-Be proficient in Microsoft Office suite (ie. Word and Excel)
-Have a general interest in contemporary art and culture
