We are very happy to be part of the 26th annual New Music Festival. This issue marks the third consecutive year of Border Crossings’ collaboration with the New Music Festival. We will be featuring interviews in the current issue with composers Meredith Monk and William Basinski who will be performing throughout the festival. “We are delighted with our collaboration,” says Border Crossings Editor, Meeka Walsh. The New Music Festival is one of this city’s cultural highlights!

We are equally delighted to welcome Meredith Monk to Winnipeg! The body of work she has made in a legendary 50-year-long career is unequalled in its range and inventiveness. She is a composer, singer, choreographer, filmmaker, installation artist and creator of opera and music-theatre works.

“I remember hearing (Monk’s music) as a teenager. It most definitely provided me with one of my musical DNA’s. I learned that vinyl by heart.” —Bjork

Her music was even featured in the Coen brothers’ film, The Big Lebowski, when Maude, the performance artist played by Julianne Moore, sprays paint from her body haress onto a canvas. Meredith Monk is indeed a legend.

Border Crossings Issue No. 140 features a 14 page interview with Monk entitled, “The Voice of Moving Meditation: An Interview with Meredith Monk.” Monk situates her work:

“[in] that space between language and abstract music. I love that ambiguity. It’s like another crack. I love those places because I think you’ll find things there between the cracks.”

Sunday, January 29th marks an exciting evening for the New Music Festival. Meredith will be performing works from throughout her multi-faceted career. Border Crossings’ Robert Enright will be in attendance at a Q + A with the composer/ artist after the show.

JOIN US! after Meredith’s concert on Sunday, January 29th for Border Crossings Issue #140 LAUNCH PARTY on the Piano Nobile Level.

We hope to see you all there!
